Sydney Will Host WorldPride 2023

Athens, October 20, 2019 – Sydney, Australia, won the 2023 WorldPride license after a long campaign and a close result, winning the majority of votes ahead of Houston, USA and Montréal. This international event, organized once every two years and powered by InterPride, the organization that brings together Pride events from around the world, will be held in 2023 for the very first time in the Southern Hemisphere.

“It goes without saying that for the volunteers, the Board of Directors, the employees and of course myself, this is a result that we wanted different. However, we are extremely proud of the candidacy we presented to more than 450 InterPride members, making the world more aware of the unique features and exceptional openness of one of the most welcoming cities to sexual and gender diversity communities (SGD). The project we have presented is based on the importance of implementing actions to facilitate and collaborate in the organization of Pride events in the Francophone world, a crying need that we will continue to promote. We warmly congratulate the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras team for its victory, as well as Houston Pride, for its strong bid. “said Éric Pineault, President and Founder of Montréal Pride.

Montréal Pride would like to warmly thank the partners who contributed significantly to this campain, both with their expertise and through financial support: TD, the Casino de Montréal, Tourisme Montréal, Air Canada, Ville de Montréal, the Government of Quebec and the Government of Canada. The efforts of our partners will not remain in vain, since Fierté Montréal intends to apply again in the near future, and thus allow the holding of a WorldPride in French-speaking territory.
